Fall 2025 Mid-Semester Progress Report Completed.

The Office of Student Success and Retention (SSR), in partnership with the SMU Registrar’s Office, has finalized the Mid-Semester Progress Report (MPR) for Fall 2025. As part of SMU’s Early Alert Process, faculty were asked to report grades for students currently earning a C- or below in their courses.

Faculty Participation Highlights

This semester’s goal was a 90% faculty participation rate. The final response rate reached 78% across all colleges, schools, and divisions. Notable participation rates include:

  • Provost/UNIV faculty: 89%
  • Lyle School of Engineering: 87%
  • Dedman College: 83%
  • Cox School of Business: 80%
  • Simmons School of Education: 71%
  • Meadows School of the Arts: 61%

Purpose and Impact

The Mid-Semester Progress Report is a key component of SMU’s proactive student support strategy. It identifies students who may benefit from additional academic assistance and enables timely outreach. Reports are shared with academic advisors, who receive follow-up emails from SSR encouraging direct contact with students and guidance on available campus resources. Students and authorized individuals also receive MPR-related updates.

“Where Research Begins”: New course in Spring 26

The Office of Engaged Learning is excited to offer UNIV 2103: “Where Research Begins” in spring 2026. Based on the book by Thomas Mullaney (Stanford) and Christopher Rea (University of British Columbia), this course enables students to generate strong research questions and projects.

In the 1-credit class, students will learn a variety of techniques for generating and testing research questions. By the end, they will produce a proposal for a robust independent project.

This is open to all undergraduate students at SMU, regardless of major, and should appeal particularly to 2nd and 3rd-year students who want to pursue distinction projects. Please refer interested students to Dr. Adam Neal, Program Manager for Undergraduate Research Programs: asneal@smu.edu.

Dr. Neal is offering four info sessions this week. Students can sign up on SMU 360.

Join the DCII Community-Engaged Teaching & Learning Research Cluster Book Club and Research Study

Join the Community-Engaged Research, Teaching, and Learning Research Cluster of the Dedman College Interdisciplinary Institute (DCII) as we explore community engagement in higher education through a faculty and staff book club and an accompanying research study.

Faculty and Staff Book Club

Join us for our book club, which will center on two core texts:

  • Teaching Community: A Pedagogy of Hope by bell hooks and
  • Educating for Citizenship and Social Justice: Practices for Community Engagement at Research Universities, edited by Tania D. Mitchell and Krista M. Soria.

Together, these works invite meaningful conversations about systemic inequities, ethical university-community partnerships, and how teaching and learning can foster civic responsibility and social change.

All faculty and staff are welcome to join. Books will be provided and can be picked up from the Office of General Education, Laura Lee Blanton Building, Suite 338. Participants will receive the four-meeting reading schedule upon registration. The first meeting will take place on November 17, from 12:00pm – 1:00pm.
