Effective this spring term, and as outlined in the Provost’s January welcome letter, SMU has adopted a new policy clarifying the use of audio and video recording in academic settings.
The policy, SMU Policy 2.27: Audio/Video Recording in Academic Settings, provides clear guidance for instructors and students and reflects the University’s commitment to transparency, academic integrity, and shared expectations in the classroom.
This policy was developed through a collaborative process involving the Faculty Senate, the Center for Teaching Excellence Faculty Advisory Board, academic leadership, the Office of Legal Affairs, and the Provost’s Office. In addition, discussion sessions were held with both the Student Senate and Faculty Senate to gather feedback and address questions.
Special thanks to the Disability Accommodations & Success Strategies team for their feedback and input, which helped shape the final policy.
To ensure broad awareness, information about this policy will be automatically included in all SMU syllabi through the University’s digital syllabus creation and curation platform.
Faculty and staff are encouraged to review the policy in full. Questions about the policy may be directed to the Office of Faculty Success.
