Join us for a Wellpower Walk at Noon, Friday, October 28!

Bring your favorite sneakers and join us for a lively 1.5-2 mile walk around our beautiful campus. Invite your colleagues to come along and meet us on the steps of Dallas Hall at noon. We usually take a quick group picture, so try to wear a Wellpower T-shirt and let’s show our support of wellness at SMU!

We’re heading into a welcome fall, so let’s take advantage of our opportunity to get in some exercise, enjoy some great conversation, and fill our senses with the gorgeous fall colors and air.

Just in case it rains (it could happen, right?) we will meet upstairs on the track at Dedman Center. You will need a Dedman Center membership to enter the facility, but at $10 a month, it’s the best bargain in town.

Avoiding Caregiver Burnout

A combination of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion arise when caregivers take on more than they can handle.  Burnout occurs when caregivers don’t receive adequate help and support when taking on the huge responsibility of caring for another person.

Caregivers often feel guilty about spending any time on themselves rather than their sick or elderly loved one.  This can lead to fatigue, stress, and even depression.

Learn to recognize the symptoms of burnout in order to prevent reaching this stage:

  • Withdrawal from friends and family
  • Lost interest in previously enjoyed activities/hobbies
  • Feelings of helplessness, irritability, and hopelessness
  • Appetite and weight changes
  • Changes in sleeping patterns
  • Getting sick often
  • Emotional and physical exhaustion
  • Feelings of wanting to hurt yourself or the person for whom you’re caring

Causes of Caregiver Burnout

Role confusion: Confusion often arises when family members assume the role of the caregiver.  It is sometimes difficult for a person to separate their role as a caregiver from their role as a spouse, child, friend, etc.

Unreasonable demands:
By assuming that their caregiving role is their own exclusive responsibility, many caregivers take on too much and place unreasonable burdens on themselves.

A lot of times, caregivers are so focused on the needs of their family member or loved one that they fail to properly take care of themselves.  If any of the following factors feel familiar to you, take a step back and consider getting outside help and support.

Additions and Changes to Professional Development Opportunities

Additional Opportunity added to the schedule:

Basics of Graphic Recording
Visual facilitation is capturing much attention lately for its ability to provide a fresh approach to meeting design and output.  One of the tools of visual facilitation is Graphic Recording; defined very simply as visually capturing information in real time.

What do Graphic Recorders Do?
Graphic recorders are scribes who listen, transcribe, and synthesize information in various settings.

The process of graphic recording provides a unique, visual experience in one of two ways:

1. Facilitation — participants engage with and co-create group memory in tandem with the facilitator and graphic recorder

2. Recording — the recorder uses listening skills to reflect the conversation back to the group as it is occurring in real time

Not an Artist?  Fear Not!
While being able to present the information in a format that is visually attractive, the most important skills of graphic recording are listening, prioritizing and synthesizing information.

Learn the Basics of Graphic Recording:
Join us as we discover and practice the basics of Graphic Recording including:

  • the questions to ask
  • the materials needed and how to set up the room
  • simple tools that support the organization and presentation of information including headers, boundaries, bullets, icons, shading, and color

You’ll be recording like a pro in no time!

Caring for the Caregiver

Though it may seem to be a contradiction, caring for yourself during the time that you are caring for another is one of the most important things you can do – for both your loved one and for yourself.  Fortunately, there’s guidance and support to help us care for others and not neglect ourselves in the process.

Six Essential Tips for Caregiving:

1. Keep your own medical records.  It is likely that you will be making many trips to multiple doctors’ offices during your time as a caregiver.  It’s crucial to keep all documentation organized and easily accessible.  Consider bringing your own computer or taking your own notes to keep a record of what you discussed with the doctors.

2. Take time for yourself.  If you can take a break, take full advantage
of it.  It’s crucial for caregivers to step away every once and awhile to have some time for themselves in order to avoid burnout.

3. Focus on one person at a time.  When you’re caring for someone, try to avoid dwelling on other concerns and focus on the person who needs you the most at that time.

4. Accept today’s realities.  It’s hard to think about your family member or loved one back when they were younger and healthier.  Aim for providing happiness and comfort in your role, and avoid hanging on to the past.

5. Know when to ask for help.  Have a support network of family and friends and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.  More and more people are becoming caregivers, and more people are needed care each day.
It’s likely that someone else will understand what you’re going through.

6. Take care of the legal issues.  Discuss financial and power of attorney
questions with a lawyer or qualified third party.

As a caregiver, you need both information and support. For more information about this topic, look for A Delicate Balance: Living Successfully with Chronic Illness by Susan Milstrey Wells. For ongoing support, consider Today’s Caregiver Magazine or look for local support at http://www.medicare.gov/caregivers/.
