As announced during the fall of 2019, SMU’s Academic Technology Council selected the Panopto video platform for campus-wide video content management, recording, and streaming. As part of the announcement, SMU and Panopto are converting over 10,000 hours of existing content from the University’s legacy video platform, Kaltura. While Kaltura has served us for a few years as our primary video capture and storage solution within Canvas, other services have since stood out from the crowd in the competitive video collaboration space, such as Panopto and other. After evaluating several solutions, it was found that Panopto provides closer integration to your Canvas courses, better recording tools, and even more ways to make your videos engaging with actionable content that can be graded and managed like any other assignment. The Panopto will replace Kaltura entirely at the end of Spring 2020.
