Updated Retention Policies for Panopto Coming Soon

Panopto LogoBeginning January 1, 2023, SMU’s retention policy for instructional videos hosted in Panopto will be regulated with a new automated retention policy:

  • Panopto Active videos not accessed within 12 months will automatically change to Panopto Archive
  • Panopto Archive videos may be restored to Panopto Active at any time within 12 months
  • Panopto Archive videos not recovered within 12 months will be permanently deleted

Panopto content creators will receive email notifications prior to files moving to Panopto Archive and/or before being automatically deleted. On December 1st, 2022, in preparation for this change, all Panopto videos accessed 2 or fewer times before June 1, 2022, will be proactively moved to Panopto Archive. No videos will be lost during this move.

Please keep in mind that Panopto is for hosting regularly used, active course-related video materials—Panopto is not an unlimited video storage system. Videos that are not used with regularity or need to be archived indefinitely should be deleted or manually off-loaded from Panopto and moved to your preferred file storage system, such as SMU Box.

If you need any assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out directly to your school’s Academic Technology Services Director (ATSD). You can also submit an IT Help Desk ticket by emailing help@smu.edu or calling 214.768.HELP and someone will follow up with you quickly to talk through any concerns!
