OIT IoT Research Lab Partners with Physics Department for Eclipse

photo of an eclipseOn April 8, 2024, in collaboration with the SMU Department of Physics, the OIT IoT Research Lab will partner in an event that’s been capturing the awe and wonder of humanity since time immemoriala total Solar eclipse! As this 4.6 billion-year-old ball of gas becomes completely blocked by our Moon, join us by gathering at Late Fountain, conveniently situated between the Airline garage and Dedman Life Sciences building, and catch the action—weather permitting—on two large flat screens powered by a reflection telescope and witness this mesmerizing, fascinating, and awe-inspiring phenomenon firsthand.  Continue reading OIT IoT Research Lab Partners with Physics Department for Eclipse

2023: A Year of Internet of Things Innovation and Collaboration

Photography and additional reporting by Guillermo Vasquez.

Two people using a flying drone outdoors.2023 has proven to be a pivotal year in the evolution of our Research Development and Internet of Things (IoT) services. With new equipment and new relationships forged across campus, Guillermo Vasquez and his IoT Lab have been hard at work to bring data points once thought ephemeral into the realm of data-driven research.

From the ballroom to the physics lab, ideas and resources have come together in the IoT Lab to implement the quickly growing Internet of Things ecosystem in all disciplines. A key aspect of this level of service is the deep collaboration Guillermo undertakes with researchers to truly understand their needs and develop solutions that can effectively and efficiently deliver results for world-changing research projects. Internet of Things Devices & Data Visualization Provide Insight into Indoor Air Quality

An image of the portable device used to measure carbon dioxide in classrooms on campus.Multiple campus groups and Office of Information Technology (OIT) teams have collaborated on a multi-disciplinary initiative to better understand indoor air quality on The Hilltop.

After continued discussions in the Faculty Senate regarding classroom air quality and the spread of COVID-19, Physics department faculty member Dr. Thomas E. Coan approached OIT staff to work together on a method to capture environmental data within classrooms and visualize said data to make inferences on possible pathogen spread, power consumption, air quality, and their possible effects on student attention and success.
