In fact, you may have heard the buzz on campus regarding SMU’s Generative AI Coalition of the Willing, which launched in May 2024. This initiative partnered with our schools and key departments to engage in AI experimentation and learn from each other. The coalition has been a success and has continued to expand. Now, we’re rolling out targeted AI training designed specifically for staff this fall.

I was honored to join Associate CIO of Academic Technology Jason Warner for the Teaching & AI panel during the Provost Symposium on AI, alongside incredible faculty from Dedman College, Dedman Law, Lyle, Simmons, and the Center for Teaching Excellence. This event brought together a vibrant mix of educators and leaders to explore how AI is being thoughtfully incorporated into research and teaching and how we, as a campus community, can lead the way. Pioneering with Purpose: SMU’s Unique Generative AI Coalition of the Willing

Over the past year, I’m proud to say that SMU has made tremendous strides in our community understanding and applications of Generative AI in ways that serve our teaching, our research, and the everyday work we do to support students. Since last May’s launch of the SMU Generative AI Coalition of the Willing, many SMU faculty and staff have stepped forward—not because they were told to, but because they were curious, committed, and courageous.
