Integrating AI with Academia: Insights from the AI Teaching Workshop
I recently met with Tyeson Seale, Director of Academic Technology for the Meadows School of the Arts, to learn more about the AI Teaching Workshop held at the Dedman School of Law on February 21, 2025.
The event, organized by the Manager of Canvas & Instructional Systems, Jennifer Mayes, featured several OIT speakers, including Eric Godat, Director of OIT Research, who presented on AI Foundations. Dedman School of Law’s ATSD James Pan presented AI teaching tools beyond chatbots, and introduced Notebook AI, a tool for content summarization and podcast generation. Zoom AI Companion at SMU: What You Need to Know
Soon, OIT will be introducing AI features in Zoom. In this post, we want to take a moment to share how you can use Zoom AI Companion responsibly and in alignment with Southern Methodist University policies.
The Zoom AI Companion features are automatically off and must be enabled by the Zoom user. Do not enable/use Zoom AI Companion in meetings where protected or sensitive categories of information will be shared/discussed.

OIT has been closely following the development of various generative AI products and evaluating their potential implications for teaching, learning, research, and university operations. Here, we can define generative AI as a technology that can generate new content similar to what they have learned from training data.
