To help improve faculty-to-student communications, this term the new “Feedback Box” was made available in Canvas. The “Feedback Box” is a simple LTI plug-in that lets students send safe, anonymous feedback to professors anytime during the course. The students are able to message their faculty anonymously and confidentially to voice concerns about classroom issues dealing with culture, race, or sexual orientation and the faculty member can respond all while protecting the privacy of the student. Meet the Jetsons
This summer, our students working with the Research and Data Science Team designed and built a cluster supercomputer. The cluster is composed of 16 NVIDIA® Jetson Nano™ Developer Kits, which are small, powerful computers that fit in the palm of their hand. The cluster can be used for projects ranging from training and running AI/ML models for image classification, object detection, segmentation, and speech processing applications to running molecular dynamics simulations of drug-protein interactions.

SMU Pilots Gradescope To Add Testing/Grading Features to Canvas
Soon, SMU is launching a pilot to provide testing/grading features to Canvas that it doesn’t have natively. This Canvas-integrated cloud system called Gradescope, we will be fully enabled within Canvas. OIT is hosting an interactive training session next Wednesday to help faculty get started. The Gradescope tool is especially valuable for disciplines that rely on submitting equations, programming codes, and the like. Microsoft Office Certifications Add Valuable Benefits to CCPA Course
Last summer, I had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Piyawan Charoensap-Kelly, also known as Dr. Kelly, assistant professor of organizational communication for Meadows’ Corporate Communication and Public Affairs division.
We met to discuss onboarding Dr. Kelly’s students of CCPA 3360: Business and Professional Communication to the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification program. Dr. Kelly explained that this course examines both written and oral communications and also focuses on professional development. In our discussion, she mentioned that she was interested in having her students pursue both the Microsoft Word and PowerPoint certifications, which would complement designated learning outcomes.
