Meet the Jetsons

This summer, our students working with the Research and Data Science Team designed and built a cluster supercomputer. The cluster is composed of 16 NVIDIA® Jetson Nano™ Developer Kits, which are small, powerful computers that fit in the palm of their hand. The cluster can be used for projects ranging from training and running AI/ML models for image classification, object detection, segmentation, and speech processing applications to running molecular dynamics simulations of drug-protein interactions.

Celebrating 20 years of the SMU STAR Program

In early 1998, Professor Bonnie Wheeler approached then Director of the Digital Commons Robert Skinner about way to help faculty realize their pedagogical vision but did not have the technical expertise to fulfill it. Out of those early discussions came the Accelerated Student Assistant Program (ASAP) and Student Technology Assistant in Residence (STAR) Program. While the ASAP Boot Camp only lasted a few years, the SMU STAR Program still continues today in its mission to assist faculty on short-term instructional technology projects. STAR Students Available for Instructional Technology Projects

The Student Technology Assistant in Residence (STAR) Program is available to work with faculty and academic departments on short-term instructional technology projects. Faculty Media Lab to close during renovations

OIT’s Faculty Media Lab will close on July 23 for the duration of the CUL renovations. The Faculty Media Lab has provided dozens of faculty with a space for multimedia projects, digitizing, and multimedia training.

While the space will be closed, the assistance provided will continue through other areas on campus. General multimedia question and assistance can be obtained by contacting the OIT Help Desk at 214-768-HELP or help@smu.edu. The SMU STAR Program will still continue to work on faculty and department digital media projects; Please continue to make requests though the help ticket system. For digitizing needs, please contact the CUL’s Norwick Center for Digital Services for availability and assistance.
