Meet the Jetsons

Students building Jetsons Cluster
Students building Jetsons Cluster

This summer, our students working with the Research and Data Science Team designed and built a cluster supercomputer. The cluster is composed of 16 NVIDIA® Jetson Nano™ Developer Kits, which are small, powerful computers that fit in the palm of their hand. The cluster can be used for projects ranging from training and running AI/ML models for image classification, object detection, segmentation, and speech processing applications to running molecular dynamics simulations of drug-protein interactions.

Conner Ozenne, a junior Computer Science major and one of the students working on the project commented, Continue reading Looking to the STARS with the Jestons

Get an Introduction to ManeFrame II

HPCDid you know that ManeFrame II (M2) is available to faculty, staff, and students of SMU? If you haven’t used M2 before, the summer is a great time to learn how to take advantage of high-performance computing in your studies or academics.  In January, Rob Kalescky and Eric Godat recorded an excellent session for the Instructional Technology Workshops on “Using ManeFrame II for Research and Teaching.”

Watch the video below and find out more about using the SMU’s ManeFrame II. Continue reading Get an Introduction to ManeFrame II

Upcoming Green Jacket Project Seminar Highlights Sustainability Efforts

Green Jacket ProjectThe Green Jacket Project is an interdisciplinary effort between the Cairns Lab and SMU’s Office of Information Technology’s Research and Data Science team, led by Dr. Eric Godat with support from Guillermo G. Vasquez and Research STAR Jaymie Ruddock. The Project involves an autonomous robot designed to spread information about sustainability and will be showcased in an upcoming Dedman College Interdisciplinary Institute (DCII) Virtual Event. Forrester replaces Gartner for Research on Campus

Forrester Research logoIf you have been using one of the campus research portals, you know how invaluable that database of research findings,  including analyses, opinions, trends, leading practices, or case studies, can be.  For the past year, the University has offered two popular choices, My Gartner and Forrester Research. After May 31, 2020, Forrester Research will be the licensed solution for SMU.

OIT Helps Physics Researchers

When some Physics researchers needed a few dedicated computers for running experiments, they reached out to OIT Customer Service Director Rachel Mulry to see if she could help. The requirements for the computers were minimal compared to current university standards but had to be stable enough to run their experiment and priced within their small budget. Within 24 hours, several laptops were found that could be donated to meet the needs of the ATLAS experiment. Continue reading OIT Helps Physics Researchers
