Microsoft Teams Migration Project

Microsoft Teams Phone Migration Project Completion: A Summary

Teams Phone iconAfter many months of planning, testing, and implementation, we are delighted to announce that the migration of telephones from Skype for Business to Microsoft Teams is complete! Around 3,200 telephone lines were migrated, with approximately 1,000 headsets and desk phones distributed to the community. Here’s a summary of what we’ve accomplished and information to make the most our of your new phone. Starting in August of 2023, OIT began planning to migrate our SMU telephone system from Skype for Business — soon to be discontinued by Microsoft — to Microsoft Teams, one of the leading communication and collaboration platforms available.

A tremendous amount of effort went into planning this very large and complex migration, which included ensuring the continued reliability of departmental numbers, common area phones, conference rooms, call centers, ring groups, call trees, and more. Once the migration was complete, the legacy Skype for Business servers in the University Data Center were decommissioned in November, ending another chapter in telecommunications history here at SMU.
