Email Migration

Faculty/Staff Email Accounts to Move to the Cloud

Email MigrationWhile SMU student email accounts were moved to our Microsoft 365 cloud service back in 2015, it is now time to finally move the rest of our accounts to the cloud.  This will simplify mailbox management and reduce the hardware and energy costs of self-hosted email servers. Since this migration is a huge undertaking, we would like to outline what to expect in the coming months.

What to Expect

The impact on your email configuration and functionality should be minimal. All of your emails and any folder structures you have created to organize your mailbox will be moved over to the cloud. OIT will notify you of your upcoming migration 10-14 days before the migration date, with a reminder the day before.

If you have access to any editor groups or departmental “shared” email accounts, those accounts will be moved at the same time as everyone with access to that account, ensuring no interruption in service.

Additional Details are on the Way!

As we plan the migration timeline, additional information will be made available to you on our Mailbox Migration project page. The migrations are scheduled to begin in January and conclude by early June. Of course, feel free to contact us at the IT Help Desk if you have any questions regarding the migration process.
