Microsoft Authenticator Default MFA Spring 2026

Microsoft AuthenticatorAs we wrap up the term, we would like to remind the SMU community that starting next spring, Microsoft Authenticator, with its improved feature set, will be the primary Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) solution for the University. For most users, this will enable the removal of the Duo Security app—except in a few situations, such as when using High-Performance Computing, where Duo Security will still be required.

New Term, New MFA.

With its improved feature set and benefits, the University has selected February 25, 2026, as the date to use Microsoft Authenticator as our primary MFA provider and enable new passwordless and phishing-resistant authentication methods. While the switch is still months away, the SMU community can take advantage of Microsoft Authenticator’s improved features immediately. Once you join the Early Adopters Group, you can enroll your device and start using passwordless sign-in with a passkey, and you’ll no longer need to enter your password for most systems. You can approve the sign-in request using Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode. Plus, with the ability to sync Passkeys to other devices, switching to a new phone or leaving the phone behind altogether becomes less of an issue.

Start using Authenticator within Minutes.

To help with the transition, the Microsoft Authenticator Adoption Project has improved the onboarding experience. To start using Microsoft Authenticator today, simply complete the Microsoft Authenticator enrollment form at smu.edu/passwordless. Within minutes, the user will be signed out of their SMU accounts and will be prompted to reauthenticate to SMU services using Microsoft Authenticator.

At that time, the app can be downloaded—if it hasn’t already—and the device will be configured to use SMU services with Authenticator.
