Email migration

Changes Coming to Future Email Address Provisioning

an graphic of a mailbox with a letter in itAs part of an ongoing project to simplify email configuration and branding, all new SMU email addresses will soon be created with @smu.edu as the primary domain instead of @mail.smu.edu. This change will occur in two phases, with Phase 1 taking place this fall and Phase 2 unfolding in stages in 2026.

What’s Changing?

  • Phase 1: will change our practice for new users to have only @smu.edu as their single institutional email address. As of December 2025 they will not be assigned an @mail.smu.edu address.
  • Phase 2: will change the default sending address for all users to @smu.edu starting in early 2026. This means that any messages you send will appear from your @smu.edu address instead of @mail.smu.edu. Messages sent to your @mail.smu.edu or other address formats will continue to arrive in your mailbox.

Additional communications and instructions will be provided in early 2026. OIT is currently assessing all existing SMU services where the SMU email address is in use. We will ensure any required changes to our services are planned to avoid impact when the change is made. If you are subscribed to non-SMU listservs to which you send messages, it is likely you’ll need to update your address for those subscriptions. More details will be shared in January.

If you have any questions regarding this change and its effects, feel free to contact the IT Help Desk or refer to our project page for details.
