Microsoft Authenticator Adoption Project

Parents: Multi-Factor Authentication Coming Soon for my.SMU

Parents,

Starting in the Spring 2026 term, SMU will be enforcing Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for Student Authorized Access accounts. We encourage you to be ahead of the curve and register for our MFA using Microsoft Authenticator now to enable this feature to safely and securely verify your SMU online identity. You can complete the sign-up process using your existing credentials, your Net ID and password, which you use to log in today.

To get started

  1. Install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device. It is available for iOS and Android.
  2. Configure the app to support SMU MFA by following these instructions.
  3. Complete the Microsoft Authenticator enrollment form using your Net ID, and you will be enrolled in the early adopters group.
  4. Within minutes, you will be able to add a safe and secure sign-in using the Microsoft Authenticator app.

What to expect

  • You will be signed out of all current SMU sessions once you fill out the form.
  • Once you become an early adopter, you will be required to authenticate into all SMU SSO services using the Microsoft Authenticator mobile app.
  • After completing the one-time setup, you will be able to take advantage of new passwordless authentication methods such as passkeys and passwordless sign-in with the Microsoft Authenticator app.

As always, if you need additional assistance, feel free to contact the IT Help Desk at 214-768-HELP (4357) or email help@smu.edu.
