Microsoft Authenticator Adoption Project

Microsoft Authenticator Now Available

Microsoft Authenticator

We’re excited to announce the availability of Microsoft Authenticator for use with your SMU accounts. In spring, we discussed a passwordless future where logins are easier and more secure, and passwords are all but eliminated. We are now starting on that journey towards the future.

Do you wish you could reduce the number of passwords you have to manage? Do you wish you could sign in faster? Are you worried that you’ll go on vacation and forget your password?Like Duo, Microsoft Authenticator allows you to safely and securely verify your SMU online identity. Once Microsoft Authenticator is your default MFA method, it will replace Duo Security for most, if not all, of your multi-factor authentications (MFA) on campus. You will be able to authenticate using the number shown on the sign-in screen on the Authenticator app when you sign in, similar to what you are doing today. But wait, there’s more!

Using Passkeys in Microsoft Authenticator allows for a streamlined experience by replacing passwords with strong authentication. The passkey on your phone or security key holds your credential and is protected with a second factor, such as a fingerprint or a PIN. In other words, you will sign into apps on your PC or mobile devices by presenting your passkey and providing your fingerprint or PIN with no additional effort on your part.

To get started

  1. Install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device. It is available for iOS and Android.
  2. Configure the app to support SMU MFA by following these instructions.
  3. Complete the Microsoft Authenticator enrollment form, and you will be enrolled in the early adopters group.
  4. Within minutes, you will be asked to reauthenticate SMU services with your new Microsoft Authenticator app.

What to expect

  • You will be signed out of all current SSO logon sessions—including phone and email. Please think carefully about the best time and day in your schedule to minimize disruptions before filling out the form.
  • Once you become an early adopter, you will be required to reauthenticate into all SMU SSO services using the Microsoft Authenticator mobile app. Please be advised that this could be disruptive to your workflow. Scheduling during regular IT Help Desk business hours is advised.
  • After completing the one-time setup, you will be able to take advantage of new passwordless authentication methods such as passkeys and passwordless sign-in with the Microsoft Authenticator app.

As always, if you need additional assistance, feel free to contact the IT Help Desk at 214-768-HELP (4357) or email help@smu.edu.
