We recently informed the community about the upcoming end-of-support for Windows 10, which occurs in October. Since security and other updates for Windows 10 will end, it’s important to upgrade your SMU-owned devices at your earliest convenience by using our self-service portal. Starting May 19, OIT will begin scheduling computers still on Windows 10 to upgrade automatically overnight. Here’s what to expect during the process.
Computer upgrade tasks will be scheduled closer to the end of the day to minimize disruption during business hours. When the task is sent to your computer, a notification will appear. You may choose to snooze the upgrade up to eight times. If you choose to snooze the upgrade 8 times, please note that after 72 hours, your device will automatically reboot and apply the upgrade. The upgrades will be scheduled in batches over several weeks, with most upgrades completed by August 1.

You will receive an email notification once your computer is scheduled to upgrade. Be sure that your data is backed up and you’ve closed any open documents and programs prior to allowing the deployment process to proceed. To check if CrashPlan has backed up your data, click the Code42 CrashPlan icon in your taskbar. If there is a green checkmark by your computer, you’re all set!

The upgrade process commonly takes around 45-60 minutes to complete. We also recently published an article with some tips on using Windows 11 for your convenience.
As we already mentioned, you can start the upgrade at any time using the Ivanti self-service portal! Look for the Windows 11 Upgrade option and click Install to begin the process. The install will work in the background.

If you have any questions about the upgrade or automatic scheduling process, don’t hesitate to let us know and we will be happy to help!
