In our Canvas Plus Monthly, we discuss the new features and enhancements available in the Canvas LMS and any updates to academic technology/software that are integrated into Canvas. In this edition, we’ll share about Canvas’ new default media player, Respondus Lockdown Browser’s latest feature, and some exciting changes with our integrations – including a workshop opportunity for Copyleaks later this month.
New Canvas Media Player
Canvas’ default media player is getting a new look! The media player playback experience has been improved with enhanced accessibility, adaptive streaming, and privacy features.
There have been several small but impactful updates:
The default embed size has been increased to 480 x 300 px, and the play bar has been redesigned and repositioned. Video quality now adjusts automatically during playback based on available bandwidth, ensuring a seamless viewing experience.
Additionally, captions can be uploaded or deleted from the edit screen, with an updated Closed Captions button made available for viewers if captions are in place. Keyboard accessibility has also been improved with the addition of a hidden shortcut icon (see above, top left). When the icon is clicked or tabbed into, it displays a list of handy keyboard actions and shortcuts.
Respondus Monitor Device Detection
Respondus Monitor, part of the Lockdown Browser integration, now alerts instructors when a device is detected in a student’s hand during an online exam.
Handheld device detection works with both frontal and side-positioned webcams. The system is trained to identify a device even when only a small part is visible in the video.
Respondus Monitor flags handheld devices automatically, but instructors have the ability to exclude this flag from proctoring results in special situations where other devices (such as calculators) might be used.
After an assessment is complete, select the “Sensitivity” dropdown, uncheck Handheld devices, and then Apply. The Handheld Device flags are then removed from proctoring results, and the Review Priority scores are updated for the class.
It is recommended that you periodically check for updates to ensure you have the latest version of LockDown Browser installed. You can do this by opening Lockdown Browser, selecting the “i” button (Windows) or the “About” button (Mac) in the toolbar, and clicking Check for Update. If a newer version is available, you will be able to download it.
Transitioning to Copyleaks
As announced in January, SMU will be concluding our licensing with Turnitin services at the end of this month. In preparation for this transition, you are encouraged to start using Copyleaks Plagiarism Detection today for your Spring, May, and Summer 2025 courses. Copyleaks is currently integrated into Canvas and has a very similar look and feel to Turnitin with additional features, such as multi-language plagiarism detection, real-time writing feedback, and side-by-side source comparisons.
To learn more about how to utilize this powerful tool, please visit our upcoming Faculty Technology Workshops page and register for our “Introduction to Copyleaks Plagiarism Detection” workshop on May 28, 2025.
Finding Alternatives to Feedback Box
Feedback Box was discontinued on April 30, 2025, following the vendor’s announcement that it would be ending its service. To assist with this transition, we have compiled this list of information on alternatives for collecting anonymous student feedback both within Canvas and with external tools. We also encourage you to visit the recent IT Connect blog post to learn more.
If you have questions about this change or would like advice on how to navigate the options available to you, please reach out to your AcademicTechnology Services Director (ATSD) or help@smu.edu.
