Entra ID Implementation Project

SMU login credentials are changing soon

screenshot of the SSO signin screen using NetIDOn December 26, 2024, SMU will switch to using NetID as the standard username for signing into SMU services. Due to a change in how we authenticate with our Single Sign-on (SSO), using your eight-digit employee ID number to sign in will no longer be possible. We are moving to a more convenient NetID that, for most people at SMU, resembles their email address. With the change less than two weeks away, we encourage everyone to start using their NetID today.

Beginning December 26, 2024, you must use your NetID and current SMU password when signing in to my.SMU, Canvas, and other SMU services using SSO—Using your eight-digit ID will no longer work. To confirm your NetID, OIT has created a myprofile.SMU page where you can look up your assigned ID. Additionally, you can use the myProfile.SMU tile in my.SMU to find that information. For most users, the NetID looks much like their @smu.edu email address.

After the change, you will be prompted to re-authenticate to SMU services using your NetID. This will include updating your mobile devices to reconnect to campus Wi-Fi and email.  As a reminder to those that manage campus services, there will be no impact to existing SSO integrations; The only thing changing is the username entered by the user.

If you store login information in a browser or a password manager, please update those entries before December 26 to minimize complications.

If you have any questions or need assistance with your NetID, please feel free to contact the IT Help Desk at 214-768-HELP (4357). To assist with the transition to NetID, the IT Help Desk will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on December 26 and 27 to answer any questions or troubleshoot issues resulting from the change. We will resume normal business hours after the holiday break starting at 8 a.m. on January 2, 2025.
