Entra ID Implementation Project

NetID Becomes Standard on December 26

screenshot of the SSO signin screen using NetIDOn December 26, 2024, SMU will switch to using NetID as the standard user name for signing into SMU services. This change in how we authenticate with our Single Sign-on (SSO) using Entra ID will allow OIT to access several modern services relevant to the SMU community, such as Microsoft Intune and Windows Hello for Business, in the future. With the switchover only six weeks away, we encourage everyone to start using their NetID today. If you use a password manager, we also recommend changing any entries to use your NetID to avoid problems after December 26.

For most users, the change will require simply using your NetID, which looks much like your @smu.edu email address, and your current SMU password when signing in to my.SMU, Canvas LMS, and other SMU services using SSO.
the myprofile tile in my.SMUIf you have questions about what your NetID is, OIT has created a new myprofile.SMU page where you can look up and locate the assigned ID. You can even use the myProfile.SMU tile in my.SMU to find that information. After the switch to Entra ID for SSO on December 26, you will be prompted to re-authenticate on your mobile devices to various services, such as PerunaNet, Outlook, and Mail, using your NetID.

For others, such as Student Authorized Accounts (accounts authorized by students to make payments), using their current login name plus @smu.edu will be required, such as 12345678@smu.edu. To help with the transition, we have already emailed those with Student Authorized Accounts and alumni with their new NetID. Please note that this change is only for signing into SMU services, such as my.SMU, and not how one would log in to third-party sites, such as ECSI Heartland, to make payments.

If you have any questions about your NetID or need assistance with using it, please feel free to contact the IT Help Desk at 214-768-HELP (4357) or email help@smu.edu. To assist with the transition to NetID, the IT Help Desk will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on December 26 and 27 to answer any questions or troubleshoot issues resulting from the change.

If you have questions or comments about the Entra ID Implementation Project and the switch to NetID, please contact Shanta Ball, the project manager, at smball@smu.edu.
