We mentioned back in August that SMU was moving to using Microsoft Entra ID as our primary Single sign-on (SSO) service. One of the most significant differences that SMU users can expect as part of that change is the support for NetID to sign in to SMU services. For most users, the NetID will look much like your @smu.edu email address. For some, such as Authorized Payers on your accounts, it will be their current login name plus the @smu.edu. While the switchover with our SSO has not happened yet, we encourage everyone to start using their NetID today.
Once the switch happens on December 26, 2024, your SMU ID number will no longer be a valid username for SSO logins. Instead, you will be required to use your NetID as your username, which is why we are encouraging users to switch now. If you have questions about what your NetID is, OIT has created a new myprofile.SMU page where you can look up and verify it. You can even use the myProfile.SMU tile in my.SMU to quickly lookup your profile and NetID. We also recommend changing any entries in your password manager to use your NetID to avoid problems when you return from winter break in January.
We are excited about the switch to Entra ID, as it will allow OIT several modern services relevant to the SMU community, such as Microsoft Intune, and Windows Hello for Business in the future. Until then, if you have questions or comments about the Entra ID Implementation Project, please contact the project manager, Shanta Ball, at smball@smu.edu.
