From SMU Aware:
Dear SMU Community,
We would like to inform you about upcoming changes to the indoor notification system in the buildings across our campus. This is an important part of alerting you to emergencies that may occur while studying, working or living on campus.
What changes are happening to the audio devices around campus?
The Office of Information Technology (OIT) is currently working to upgrade the Mass Notification System (MNS) in 72 buildings. The existing system will be converted to the Alertus MNS to provide enhanced capabilities that better integrate with our campus notification systems, such as the text and email alerts you receive from SMU Aware.
How could the installation impact you?
Testing will be part of the installation, which means you will likely hear emergency test messages during the process. Every effort will be made to minimize any disruption to classes and activities in the building.
When will the transition start?
OIT will reach out to building contacts before the equipment is installed. Installation and testing will occur building by building, beginning this week (February 12, 2024) and will continue over the next few months. The process involves connecting and testing each device to ensure that the audio is functional and sufficiently loud for everyone in the building to hear the message.
How is testing conducted?
The test message, “This is a test,” will be announced through the audio devices in the building. We anticipate that the testing for each building will not exceed five minutes. Building managers will have the scheduled date and time for testing.
We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we work toward ensuring a more robust and effective mass notification system for the safety and well-being of our campus community.
