Data Center Firewall Update to Impact Campus Services in January

OIT's Firewall iconTTo start off the new year, the OIT Infrastructure Team will be working on the third and final phase of the 100G Firewall Project. This phase includes replacing the Data Center firewalls on campus. Unfortunately, this maintenance will include a network outage impacting all IT services housed in the Data Center, as the firewalls are the primary gateway for network traffic within the Data Center, and when offline, will cause services in the Data Center to be unreachable.

To minimize the disruption, the team is targeting Saturday, January 6, 2024, at 9 p.m. during a low-usage period to begin the maintenance. While the work is expected to be completed in about 2 hours, the entire maintenance window is reserved until 2 a.m. During this time, users can expect the loss of access to campus IT services, such as the SMU website and my.SMU, while the update is being performed. Campus internet and email services will be available during the maintenance. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

This scheduled maintenance is essential for keeping our network running smoothly. OIT personnel will verify that all services are functional at the end of the maintenance activity. If there are any issues, we will notify the campus via our normal communication channels. If you have any scheduled processes requiring internet access that run during this time, please reschedule those to avoid any interruptions.

If you have any questions or need assistance, please feel free to contact the IT  Help Desk at 214-768-HELP (4357) or email help@smu.edu.
