SMU Libraries Launch Love Data Week

Love Data Week heartSMU Libraries has teamed up with the Center for Research Computing, the Data Science Institute, and the Office of Information Technology’s Research Services Team for “Love Data Week.” This series of workshops beginning on February 14th is targeted to those with a burgeoning interest in the data sciences to the seasoned researchers. Topics include:

  • Introduction to using SMU’s high-performance computing systems
  • Embarking on machine learning
  • Digging into data mining

Love Data Week content isn’t limited to one week. Data workshops are available through the spring with other support and services meant to help anyone along in their research and scholarly journey. Learn more about the research services workshops available this spring.

Love Data Week:

Introduction to Research Data Management
February 14, 12 – 12:30 p.m.

Learn the basics of research data, research data management, and services SMU Libraries provides.

Introduction to the DMPTool
February 14, 12:30 – 1 p.m.

Learn how to use the DMPTool to create regular or Machine-Actionable Data Management Plans.

Overview of Databases with Datasets
February 15, 12 – 1 p.m.

Discover which databases with datasets that SMU Libraries subscribes to, free databases,  and learn about data scraping and text mining.

Introduction to Text Mining: Finding and Preparing Text Datasets for Mining
February 15, 3 – 5 p.m.

An overview of databases and the preparation required for creating datasets for text mining. Topics include the data lifecycle, tools, access, copyright, and licensing issues.

Introduction to Data Storage and SMU Scholar
February 16, 12 – 12:45 p.m.

An introduction to SMU Libraries’ institutional repository (SMU Scholar), data storage options, long-term preservation of data, and copyright practices.

Artificial Intelligence for the Non-Expert
February 17, 12 – 1 p.m.

Learn the difference between Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning through defining terms and highlighting real-world applications of AI, and an introduction to SMU computing resources for AI research.

Introduction to Github
February 18, 12 – 1 p.m.

A beginner’s guide to basic creation and management of repositories, pushing and pulling, and use cases.
