Microsoft Authenticator Adoption Project

Join the Microsoft Authenticator Early Adoption

Microsoft AuthenticatorIn spring, we discussed a passwordless future where logins are easier and more secure, and passwords are all but eliminated. While we are not quite there yet, we are starting the journey to the future, and you can help. We’re excited to announce the availability of Microsoft Authenticator for your SMU accounts as an early adopter. If you participate, Authenticator will replace Duo Security for most, if not all, of your multi-factor authentications (MFA) on campus.

Like Duo, Microsoft Authenticator allows you to safely and securely verify your online identity at SMU using two-factor authentication.  Keep your account secure with Microsoft Authenticator.Once Microsoft Authenticator is your default MFA method, you will simply enter the 2-digit number displayed on the sign-in screen using the Authenticator app when you sign in, similar to what you are doing today. But there’s more.

Do you wish you could reduce the number of passwords you have to manage? Do you wish you could sign in faster? Are you worried that you will go on vacation and forget your password? Passkeys in Microsoft Authenticator can help!

Passkeys provide a streamlined user sign-in experience by replacing passwords with strong two-factor authentication. The passkey on your phone or security key holds your credential and is protected with a second factor, such as a fingerprint or a PIN. In other words, you will sign into apps on your PC or mobile devices by presenting your passkey and providing your fingerprint or PIN with no additional effort on your part. This is included with the move to Microsoft Authenticator.

To get started

  1. Install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device. It is available for iOS and Android.
  2. Configure the app to support SMU MFA by following these instructions.
  3. Complete the Microsoft Authenticator enrollment form, and the IAM team will enroll you in the early adopters group.
  4. In a few minutes, you will be asked to reauthenticate to SMU services with Microsoft Authenticator.

What to expect

  • You will be signed out of all current SSO logon sessions—including phone and email. Please think carefully about the best time and day in your schedule to minimize disruptions before filling out the form.
  • Once you become an early adopter, you will be required to reauthenticate into all SMU SSO services using the Microsoft Authenticator mobile app. Please be advised that this could be disruptive to your workflow. Scheduling during regular IT Help Desk business hours is advised.
  • After you’ve gone through that one-time setup event, the Authenticator app will allow you to take advantage of future improvements, including passwordless authentication.
