Getting started with generative AI

Empowered by AI: New AI Training Pathways Available for Staff

icon of a computer chip with the letters a.i. on it.AI isn’t coming to campus; it’s already here. In fact, you may have heard the buzz on campus regarding SMU’s Generative AI Coalition of the Willing, which launched in May 2024. This initiative partnered with our schools and key departments to engage in AI experimentation and learn from each other. The coalition has been a success and has continued to expand. Now, we’re rolling out targeted AI training designed specifically for staff this fall.

There will be three training series available:

AI Basics

    • For individuals who want to learn more about AI and use the AI solutions currently provided under our campus agreements
    • Courses offered include an Introduction to AI and the Art of Prompting, and Copilot (light)

AI Operation Copilot

    • For individuals wanting a more in-depth experience with AI and using a premium subscription to Microsoft Copilot, OIT will cover the costs associated with the subscription.
    • Courses include the Introduction to AI and the Art of Prompting, and a series of short videos and challenge exercises using Premium Copilot and Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and various meeting tools
    • A discussion group to share ideas and other opportunities for learning

Departmental Consultations

    • For departments with a number of personnel committed to AI training
    • OIT personnel will facilitate several meetings with your team to discuss how AI might assist with process improvement, automation, and efficiency

Staff Insights on Copilot for SMU

Over the past several months, 20 individuals participated in Microsoft’s AIX00 Cipilot research group.  In return for a premium license, these users committed to using Copilot a minimum of 2-3 hours a month by completing designated Microsoft “missions” to test advanced beta features. Here’s how one of our early adopters has used Copilot at work.
