Data from government institutions and research can be a treasure trove for academic researchers. However, obtaining that data in a usable form hasn’t always been easy. That’s now changing with some new ways to obtain US government data from a central online portal!
Science Magazine recently reported the introduction of the Research Data Gov portal. This site provides a searchable repository of digital data from 16 federal agencies, including USDA, SAMHSA, the Department of Energy, the Census Bureau, and more. The website allows for data to be searched and browsed by an agency or topic.
Created in response to the Foundations of Evidence-based Policymaking Act of 2018, the site is the single portal for the discovery of restricted data in the federal statistical system. Visitors to the site are able to apply for access to this data using a single-application process built into ResearchDataGov. ResearchDataGov.org is built by and hosted at ICPSR at the University of Michigan, under contract and guidance from the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics within the National Science Foundation.
