University of Maryland – Pre-doctoral Trainee Program

The Department of Economics at the University of Maryland, College Park is recruiting two trainees for a new pre­doctoral program. The program will bring students to campus for one year of research experience under faculty supervision and for advanced course work. Trainees who successfully complete the pre-doctoral year will be invited to enroll in the UMD PhD program (with full funding) without further application.

The program seeks to prepare students from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the economics profession for graduate work by providing relevant research experience and the opportunity to take additional courses, such as upper-level math and statistics, and to promote long-term investment in mentoring that extends from the pre-doctoral year through completion of the PhD.

University of Notre Dame – Pre-doctoral Research Associate, Economics

The university of Notre Dame has announced a new Poverty Initiative that is charged with establishing Notre Dame as a premier university in poverty-related research, student formation, and policy and program impact. The program will be hiring three pre-doctoral (pre-doc) Research Associates who work closely with faculty in different social science disciplines to assist in their empirical research. This pre-doc position will work in the field of economics, under the direction of two scholars in the department. Kasey Buckles will lead a team focused on developing the Census Tree and using the data for research in economic history and demography (with Joseph Price at BYU). Jeff Denning will supervise work in support of his research agenda on higher education opportunities.
This is an excellent opportunity for a student considering graduate school and would be a bridge between college and graduate school for students interested in empirical applied microeconomic research. Research associates will perform a variety of tasks including coordinating project logistics, creating analysis files, statistically analyzing data, helping to create presentations, editing research papers, assisting in the preparation of grant proposals, assisting in the writing of IRB protocols and data sharing agreements, and assisting in the dissemination of project results.

UT Austin – One-year Master’s Program

Research Associate – UCLA Anderson

Job Description:

Professor Ashvin Gandhi (UCLA Anderson School of Management) is looking to hire a full-time research associate to begin in summer 2024 for an anticipated term of two years. The position will entail close collaboration and assistance with all stages of empirical economics research. Research topics will include industrial organization, healthcare, and urban economics.

Qualifications:

  • Strong quantitative background.
  • Strong grades in quantitative coursework (e.g. math, econ, stats) is required.
  • Background in economics is a plus but is not necessary. Applicants with strong technical backgrounds and enthusiasm to learn are welcome.
  • Experience with statistical software such as Stata, R, or Python.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated programming proficiency and the ability to work in other languages, such as Julia or C++.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience working with large datasets.
  • Candidates with less programming experience but an enthusiasm to learn are encouraged to apply and will be given serious consideration.

Successful research analysts will support research by Professors Arthur van Benthem and Susanna Berkouwer, in economics of energy and the environment. There are several open positions. Examples of recent projects include: efficiency losses from imperfect environmental policies, energy efficiency adoption, fuel economy standards, carbon offsets, infrastructure construction, and pass-through and market power in the context of solar subsidies. Successful candidates will join Wharton’s Department of Business Economics and Public Policy (BEPP) and become part of a cohort of predoctoral research fellows. BEPP offers many opportunities for personal and professional development through learning new technical skills, attending seminars, and taking courses. Position Overview

The AV Criminal Justice team aims to improve public safety and make the U.S. criminal justice system fairer and more effective. They work with experts from inside and outside of government and across disciplines to support rigorous, policy-relevant research on what works; develop policies based on research and evidence; and advance meaningful policy change at the federal, state, and local levels.

AV is seeking a Criminal Justice Research Analyst to support the research team across its various portfolios to help identify and analyze opportunities for high-impact philanthropic projects in the field of criminal justice. This position will be located in AV’s Houston, New York or Washington, D.C. office and will report to the Director of Criminal Justice Research.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required in a relevant field such as economics, sociology, political science, psychology, criminal justice, criminology, public policy, or other social sciences
  • 1 – 2 years of relevant work experience including part-time work or internships; preferably in positions conducting policy-relevant research and evaluation projects, policy reform, and/​or project management
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to summarize and communicate key takeaways to diverse, nontechnical audiences.
  • Exceptional project management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to analyze problems, assess potential solutions, and articulate tradeoffs

The salary range for this position will be $75,000-$90,000.

EBRD Intern (Economics) Opening

EBRD’s Office of the Chief Economist is looking for full-time summer interns to support the OCE teams working on the Transition Report.

Role Overview

The Office of the Chief Economist (“OCE”) consists of a team of around 20 economists, economic analysts, and support staff. It contributes to the operational, policy and strategy work of the Bank and provides intellectual leadership on the development of well-functioning market economies in the EBRD’s region of operation, which comprises countries in Emerging Europe and Central Asia, Mongolia, as well as some economies in North Africa. OCE also supports the Bank’s operations by monitoring macroeconomic developments and risks. In addition, OCE undertakes economic research, and publishes the EBRD’s Transition Report and other research-based papers and reports.

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables:

The duties of the intern will include, but may not be limited to, the following:

  • Working on analysis of household surveys conducted in around 40 countries.
  • Downloading, cleaning and preparing a variety of datasets on macroeconomic and microeconomic issues pertaining to recent developments in the transition region.
  • Conducting statistical analyses based on these data and create graphs and charts to be used in the Transition Report and various presentations.
  • Contribute to drafting a working paper or a chapter of the Report.
