Food and Housing Resources

We know that graduate student life is difficult.

Not only is the research difficult, but the financial burdens of graduate school are only getting worse with COVID and inflation issues. If you are having trouble with food or housing, you are absolutely not alone. We have compiled a list of resources available to help with these issues.

CGC Food Pantry

The CGC has now created a Chemistry-department specific food pantry, located in the Chemistry Department Mail Room. The pantry is stocked from CGC funds and donations. Please feel free to take what you need.

The Shop at SMU

The Office of Student Support has put together a food pantry available to all SMU students, which includes perishables, celiac-friendly foods, and other sundries. To access it, talk to the front desk of the Fondren Library to ask for the key. It is a bit hidden, but they will point you in the right direction. Bringing reusable bags is recommended, although they will provide one if you need it. For more details, click here.

The CGC is working tirelessly to create and promote additional housing resources. At this point in time, the resources are unfortunately slim. Here are a few ideas to help with finding affordable housing options.

  • SMU has created a Graduate Student Housing Portal to help graduate students find affordable housing near the school.
  • Please join the CGC Facebook group. By joining, you can talk with fellow graduate students from the department and look for roommates, used furniture, and more!
