SMU Libraries Digital Collections Update: November 2022

In November 2022, SMU Libraries uploaded 493 items into SMU Libraries Digital Collections. Highlights include:

278 postcards, ca. 1874-1959, from the John Miller Morris Real Photographic Postcards and Photographs of Texas collection. This project was made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services and Texas State Library and Archives Commission (Grant Number LS-252486-OLS-22). (2023). These postcards depict images in counties including Comanche, Dallas, El Paso, Palo Pinto, Stephens, and Tarrant, and many others. Two examples are postcards featuring a photograph of President Taft with Texas Governor Campbell in El Paso and a portrait of Plennie Wingo, who walked backwards from Santa Monica, California to Istanbul.

83 photographs, 1916-1962, from the Southern Methodist University Arden Club Collection held by the Bywaters Special Collections. These photographs depict performances from 1916 through the 1960s. The productions range from ancient works like Euripides’ “Iphigenia in Tauris” to Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” to less-well-known 20th century works like “Night over Taos”.

6 interviews have been added to the Southern Methodist University Oral History Interviews and Digital Humanities Student Projects collection. These interviews, with Ken Howard, Tiffany Lam, DJ Pierce, Felix Pire, Dalia Quezada Campos, and Eric Reed, are part of the Voices of SMU project.

30 items, ca. 1910-1920, from the Elmer and Diane Powell Collection on Mexico and the Mexican Revolution. These photographs show scenes in and around El Paso, Ciudad Juarez, and elsewhere in Mexico. This set depictss Federal Mexican troops and Pancho Villa’s Insurrectos among other participants in the revolution, urban landscapes and buildings, prisons and guards, medical and rescue workers, and views of spectators from El Paso watching battles in Juarez from hotel rooftops and the banks of the Rio Grande. Some of these postcards show graphic images of executions, the dead, and may contain racist terminology.

6 diaries, 1927-1945, from Sir Ellice Victor Elias Sassoon Papers and Photographs. These diaries feature photographs, newspaper clippings, passenger lists for various sailing trips between Europe and China, seating charts for a number of events Sir Victor attended, and handwritten diary entries.

48 images, 1949-1952, from the Richard Steinheimer Photograph Collection. These images include negatives, color transparencies, and glass slides, and were taken in California and Nevada. Of particular note are a series of images taken from the Southern Pacific ferry on San Francisco Bay, which features striking views of the Oakland Bay Bridge.

31 course catalogs, 1981-1986, from the Southern Methodist University Course Catalogs collection. These catalogs contain general information and course descriptions from each of SMU’s programs of study during the 1980s.

11 folders of press releases from the Texas Instruments Records collection. These releases cover content on events, shows, product releases, and internal TI affairs from March 1969 through December 1970.
