Opportunity for students to publish in the Student Monthly Labor Review

There is a new publishing opportunity for students with an established and respected journal, the Monthly Labor Review (MLR), which is published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The MLR publishes a wealth of research in a wide variety of fields. Subjects include the labor force, employment, inflation, productivity, occupational injuries and illnesses, wages, prices, and more. The new Student MLR department is intended to complement our current MLR offerings in which students have an opportunity to publish their work in a peer-reviewed journal.

To help introduce faculty and students to this new opportunity, there will be information sessions on September 10, 2024, at 3:00 pm eastern time and on September 11, 2024, at 6:00 pm eastern time. Registration for the events is required and is available online at the following links: session 1 and session 2.

Celebrating the Achievements of our Economics Graduates!

On May 11, 2024, we proudly celebrated a significant milestone for the Department of Economics as 142 bright minds were awarded their degrees. Among them were 133 undergraduates, 7 master’s students, and 2 PhD students, each marking the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and passion for the field of economics. Congratulations to each and every one of them as they embark on the next chapter. Their time here has equipped them with the analytical tools and critical thinking skills needed to navigate and influence the global economic landscape.

Celebrating the Accomplishments of Our 2023 Economics Graduates

As we bid farewell to another academic year, it is with great pleasure and pride that we extend our warmest congratulations to the 2023 graduates of the Department of Economics!  We celebrate not only our students’ academic achievements but also the exciting futures that lie ahead. They have shown resilience in navigating complex economic theories, mastering analytical skills, and applying knowledge to real-world problems. The countless hours spent conducting research, engaging in spirited discussions, and collaborating with peers have paid off, and we could not be prouder of them.

Economists possess a unique perspective that can shape the world in profound ways. Their expertise in understanding the complexities of markets, decision-making, and policy implications gives them a solid foundation for diverse career paths. Many of our students double majored while at SMU in fields ranging broadly from physics, to journalism, to public policy. Seventy-Two percent of our graduates had an internship during their time at SMU, and 41% of graduates accepted an offer of full-time employment prior to graduating. Most of our students heading  to the workforce found employment in finance and insurance, while 16% of our graduates were bound for graduate or law school.

We are excited to see the positive impact our graduates will undoubtedly make in the world, and we look forward to hearing about their future accomplishments!

   

Former SMU PhD student wins best paper prize

Ani Harutyunyan is a former PhD student in the SMU economics department who eventually earned her PhD at KU Leuven in Belgium.  A chapter of her PhD dissertation that she wrote while at SMU has been awarded the Bergson Prize by the Association of Comparative Economic Studies. This prize is given once every 2 years to best paper published during that period in the journal Comparative Economic Studies.
