Early Literacy Tutoring Opportunity ***
Partners in Opportunity, a local non-profit dedicated to closing the achievement gap, is looking for volunteer Literacy Tutors for an after-school tutoring program for low-income early elementary school children in grades K-2. This is a unique opportunity for students to earn practicum hours needed to complete course requirements for the SMU Learning Therapy program or other graduate/undergraduate courses in the field of education, and to earn hours toward CALP or CALT certification, while making a significant difference in the lives of underprivileged kids. The program runs Monday through Friday on campus at SMU.
Please see attached for the Literacy Tutor Job Description
Literacy Tutors will use a structured literacy curriculum, and will receive support and training from a Lead Dyslexia Interventionist with extensive expertise in early literacy. The time commitment for literacy tutors is 4:15-5:15, Monday through Friday. Tutors will work one-on-one with a given student throughout their involvement in the program.
If you are interested in the program, you may fill out an application here: Tutor Application

***SMU students, please be sure to verify with your particular program IF the hours would count toward your certification. If you do volunteer, this arrangement will be between you and the non-profit, especially regarding the “driving or escorting” of students as noted in the job description.***
