Torn Apart: Punk + New Wave Graphics, Fashion & Culture: 1976-1986 brings together two notable collections of posters, flyers, clothing, and ephemera from this highly influential era of pivotal cultural shift in Britain and the United States. This exhibition features the collections of Andrew Krivine, scholar and collector, and Malcolm Garrett, MBE RDI, prominent graphic designer of this decade, to highlight the DIY counterculture in areas of music, graphics, and fashion. Featured graphics include designs for The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Buzzcocks, The Cramps, Grace Jones, Talking Heads, Devo and many more. Clothing featured in the exhibition include original pieces from BOY and Vivienne Westwood’s SEX, revolutionary shops on King’s Road in 1970s London. Accompanying the exhibition are Sheila Rock’s iconic photos of punk and New Wave bands.

Krivine and Garrett will speak about their collections and experiences in the early days of punk rock. Michael Worthington, curator of the exhibition, and faculty and co–director of the Graphic Design program at CalArts, will moderate this discussion.

An Evening Talk with Malcolm Garrett & Exhibition Reception – February 9 at 6 pm, O’Donnell Hall, Owen Arts Center, SMU
Garrett will speak about his renowned career as a graphic designer in the music industry and other creative fields. Following the talk, please join Malcolm Garrett, Andrew Krivine, and curator Michael Worthington for a wine reception celebrating the exhibition opening from 7-9 p.m. at the Hawn Gallery in Hamon Arts Library.

Bios
Andrew Krivine is owner of one of the largest collections of punk rock posters and memorabilia, and author of Too Fast to Live, Too Young to Die, which presents a visual overview of his collection with commentary. His most recent publication, Reversing into the Future, offers a curated view of his collection of New Wave posters, flyers, and ephemera with a discussion of this fascinating period of graphic design. Arriving in the UK in 1977 to visit his cousin, the burgeoning punk rock movement in London grasped hold of Krivine and seeded a lifelong engagement with the era.
Malcolm Garrett, MBE RDI, is a UK-based graphic designer who works across a variety of disciplines and media. Among the achievements in his outstanding and influential career, Garrett’s graphic work came to prominence with the iconic album cover for the band Buzzcocks, along with historic designs for other punk rock groups.
Michael Worthington is faculty and co–director of the Graphic Design program at CalArts. Curator of the Hawn Gallery exhibition, Torn Apart, Worthington is the founding partner of Counterspace (Los Angeles), a graphic design studio specializing in editorial and identity work for cultural clients. His work has appeared and been exhibited throughout the United States and globally. As curator of the exhibition, Inside Out & Upside Down: Posters from CalArts 1980–2019, he edited and published the accompanying catalogue.
Sheila Rock is an American photographer who documented the 1970s Punk Rock bands and the music’s culture. Notable bands have included The Sex Pistols, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, The Clash, and others. In addition to her music photography, she has also had a successful career as a commercial photographer in fashion and portraiture. She continues to work as a photographer, publishing her photobook collections.
