SMU Digital Collections Update: January 2019

In January 2019, SMU Libraries uploaded 207 items into SMU Libraries Digital Collections.

Highlights include:

82 bank notes from the Rowe-Barr Collection of Texas Currency, as part of the TexTreasures FY2019 grant program, sponsored by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Featured among these notes are U.S. national currency from the national bank note era’s three charter periods (1863-1929), all of which were issued by banks in Texas. National bank notes were the most plentiful form of U.S. currency during their heyday and contain portraits of U.S. Presidents who are not shown on modern paper currency, such as James Garfield and William McKinley, as well as engravings from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing that are modeled after various notable paintings depicting scenes from American history and other items of Americana. The notes contain signatures from U.S. Treasury officials and the cashiers and presidents of chartered banks throughout Texas.

10 images, ca. 1970s-1991, by Andy Hanson to the Collection of Photographs by Andy Hanson. Among these images are photographs of celebrities visiting the Dallas area, including Larry Hagman and Elizabeth Taylor. Also included are two noteworthy images of Jim Lehrer—one at a KERA tribute to Ralph Rogers, and the other with his wife, Kate, at an event at Bloomingdale’s.

1 oral history interview has been added to the Southern Methodist University Oral History and Digital Humanities Student Projects collection. This interview, with Carlos Carpizo, is part of the Voices of SMU project.

84 photographs, ca. 1936-1955, from the George W. Cook Dallas/Texas Image Collection. These images, many of which were taken by Orbette A. Homer, show students and faculty at Crozier Tech, as well as a number of views in and around Dallas. Dallas buildings, streets, and other landmarks feature prominently.

20 photographic prints, ca. 1860-1945, were added to the Baldwin Locomotive Works Builder’s Cards collection. These images include locomotives that were built for Grand Trunk Railway, The Great Northern Railway, Canadian National Railways, Canadian National Rolling Stock, Ltd., Great Lakes Stone & Lime Co., Goldsboro Lumber Co., and others. Most were built for passenger service, but others were built for freight, logging, or switching.

Bridwell Library Exhibit:

Monuments in Early Greek Printing is now on view in the Entry Hall of Bridwell Library. The influence of Greek language and literature on modern culture is as profound as it is underappreciated. The widespread use of Latin throughout much of European history tends to obscure the Greek origins of seminal literature. But much of the scripture, history, and mythology with which people are familiar today originated in Greek texts.
