SMU Libraries Digital Collections Update: September 2022

In September 2022, SMU Libraries uploaded 299 items into SMU Libraries Digital Collections. Highlights include:

82 cookbooks and recipes, 1797-1956, were added to the new DeGolyer Library Cookbook Collection. Among these are recipes handwritten in Spanish, as well as a number of printed cookbooks with attractive covers. Highlights include a book of tried and true beauty products (in Spanish), two collections of recipes home remedies and household products (in English).

4 interviews have been added to the Southern Methodist University Oral History Interviews and Digital Humanities Student Projects collection. These interviews, with Jordan Chlapecka, Randolph Hubach, Ashni Pabley, and Roger Roe are part of the Voices of SMU project.

27 items, ca. 1900-1979, part of the DeGolyer Library’s online exhibit, “Send Me a Postcard! Women on the Road across 19th-20th Century America,” were added to multiple digital collections. Among these are postcards and pamphlets advertising various car models, an Emily Post book of traffic etiquette, a children’s book about the motor car, and more. Please note that seven of these items are restricted due to rights reasons.

74 issues, 2009-2013, from The Daily Campus. Among these is a special edition published in November 2009 in which The Daily Campus collaborated with STREETZine, a publication put out by a homeless shelter in Dallas, called the Stewpot. The publication is printed and sold by at-risk/homeless people to generate income for themselves.

30 real photographic postcards, ca. 1910-1920, from the Elmer and Diane Powell Collection on Mexico and the Mexican Revolution. These images show scenes in and around El Paso, Ciudad Juarez, Agua Prieta, Chihuahua, and elsewhere in Mexico. The images cover a variety of scenes from Mexico during the Revolutionary period, from scenes of battle to its aftermath, public figures delivering orations, and soldiers with military equipment.

20 images, ca. 1932-1934, from the Robert Yarnall Richie Photograph Collection. These images are primarily aerials of estates and properties located in parts of New York, New Jersey, and Miami. Included are the estates of national newspaper advertiser Paul Block, investment banker Walter P. Bliss, and the steam yacht of American publisher Cyrus H. K. Curtis, anchored in the Port of Miami. Also included are aerials of the Somerset Hills Country Club, located in Bernardsville, New Jersey, along with shade tobacco fields, located in the Connecticut River Valley.

39 course catalogs, 1972-1980, from the Southern Methodist University Course Catalogs collection. These catalogs contain general information and course descriptions from each of SMU’s programs of study during the 1970s.

16 items from February 1971 are now annotated in the WFAA Newsfilm Collection. In additions to updates to 15 previously available items, the newsreel for January 7-8, 1971 is newly available in the digital collections.

About 250 images were added to the Fifteenth-Century Printed Books collection.

The newly-published A.V. Lane Museum collection was added to the Bridwell Library Digital Collections, and 21 new items were uploaded.
