SMU faculty and librarians collaborate to enhance student learning

Collaboration between librarians and faculty yields future research, student success and awards

Congratulations to the Spring 2025 winners of the SMU Libraries Research Assignment Stipend! This stipend is awarded to faculty members who integrate components of information literacy in their courses, while also collaborating with SMU librarians who assist in this integration.

Applications are considered for their inclusion of learning outcomes focused on information literacy, projects that allow students to develop their research skills, and commitment to collaboration with subject librarians, who are trained in research in the field in which the faculty members specialize.

Spring 2025 Winners

Constantin C. Icleanu

Denise DuPont

Constantin C. Icleanu and Denise DuPont will collaborate with humanities librarian Rebecca Graff for their course, Topics in Spanish Civilization. The committee who evaluated the instructors’ report emphasized the potential for a high level of collaboration between the instructors and Rebecca, and applauded the inclusion of an innovative assignment teaching students to ethically use generative artificial intelligence (AI), which will be facilitated in no small part by Rebecca’s sessions on retrieval augmented generative AI and strategic searching for sources.

Kerry Maguire

Kerry Maguire will collaborate with arts librarian Kate Alleman for her course, Introduction to Photography. The course emphasizes visual critical information literacy through the medium of photography, and Kate will lead sessions on visual literary, citations, as well as create a guide for students and lead library workshops.

Frederico Câmara

Frederico Câmara will work with Hamon Arts Library director Jolene de Verges and Kate Alleman for his graduate seminar, which will be a forum for discussion of current issues in the theory and practice of art. Students will have the opportunity to meet with artists, dealers, curators, critics, and collectors in this innovative course, and the librarians will contribute to the course’s success with three in-depth library classes on the research process.

Congratulations to the faculty members and librarians for their efforts in enabling student success, and promoting information literacy on the Hilltop!
