Collections Highlight

A Clements Center travel grant recipient researching southern United States borderlands during the mid 19th century requested the journal of William Jackson Palmer, treasurer of the Kansas Pacific Railroad who was surveying a southern route in 1867. Pictured here is a page from the journal featuring notes, a geological survey, and a pressed plant. Click here to learn more.

New Accessions

Earlier this month, Marinell Turnage walked into the DeGolyer with a diary she had purchased at a Highland Park garage sale for $2. Marinell began paging through the journal she had bought on a whim, which became her “can’t-put-it-down weekend reading entertainment, like a romance novel that was missing its last chapter.” The diary was written by a SMU freshman in 1930, and Marinell was kind enough to donate both the diary and a typed transcription to SMU. Stay tuned to learn more about this exciting accession!

Newly Digitized Items

30 photographs taken between 1880 and 1940 were recently digitized as part of the TexTreasures grant. The images featured Texas buildings, landscapes, and events. Featured here in an image of men dumping liquor at a U.S. Customs House in Brownsville during prohibition.
