SMU Libraries Digital Collections Update: November 2023

In November 2023, SMU Libraries uploaded and/or updated 329 items in SMU Libraries Digital Collections. Highlights include:

49 manuscripts, documents, and imprints, 1837-1936, comprising 1,596 pages have been uploaded to the Texas: Photographs, Manuscripts, and Imprints digital collection. The items include charters for the cities of Borger, Cleburne, and Mexia; a political speech from George Clark while running for governor; and blueprints for road construction near Camp Travis, as well as 36 items from a bound collection of documents from Texas’ time as the Republic of Texas and new state in the Union. This project was made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services and Texas State Library and Archives Commission (Grant Number LS-253655-OLS-23).

4 interviews have been added to the Southern Methodist University Oral History Interviews and Digital Humanities Student Projects collection. These interviews, with Caleb Almond, Corey Ellis, Ahmed Rahat, and Stephen Tan, are part of the Voices of SMU project.

44 course catalogs have been added to the Southern Methodist University Course Catalogs collection. These catalogs document SMU’s class offerings for various academic years from the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s.

86 photographs, 1947-1953, from the Richard Steinheimer Photograph Collection. Subjects include a beanery in San Diego, a passenger’s view of the San Joaquin “Daylight”, a color photograph of Tom Braunger, and the exterior of a dance hall.

2 drawings, 1891 and 1912, from the Collection of Baldwin Locomotive Works Records. This erecting card drawings were made for the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company  and Brewer, Charles & Company.

37 lithograph cards, 1892-1893, created by the Singer Manufacturing Company as a souvenir for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exhibition in Chicago, Illinois. They feature traditional dress from various countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa. Countries showcased include Bosnia (now Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Burmah (now Myanmar).

5 documents, 1871-1924, were uploaded to the DeGolyer Library: Photographs, Manuscripts, and Imprints digital collection covering various topics related to women’s suffrage, including a program for the 1924 “Forward into Light” pageant.

1 pamphlet, 1912, entitled “To the women voters of the United States from the women in political bondage: vote the Progressive Ticket and make us free” by Theodore Roosevelt, Jane Addams, and the 1912 Progressive Party from the Doris A. and Lawrence H. Budner Collection.

4 documents, 1916-1922, were uploaded to the North America: Photographs, Manuscripts, and Imprints digital collection, covering several topics related to women’s rights, including a pamphlet about how white women can support Black women in the South. It also includes two broadsides supporting South Dakota’s Woman Suffrage Amendment, which was up for vote on November 7, 1916.

4 documents, 1872-1918, were uploaded to the Texas: Photographs, Manuscripts, and Imprints digital collection covering topics related to women’s rights, including a voter instruction card  by the Texas Secretary of State that provides guidelines for an upcoming election.

2 documents, 1917 and 1879, were uploaded to the U.S. West: Photographs, Manuscripts, and Imprints digital collection: a survey of the results of women’s suffrage in California and an article about what happened over the nine years since Wyoming achieved women’s suffrage.

20 oral history transcript excerpts, 1970s, from the Ronald L. Davis Oral History Collection. The interviewees are from all branches of the performing arts, but the emphasis is on motion pictures and popular music. Many interviewees give detailed accounts of personal experience and reflections from their professional career. Highlights include excerpts from interviews with Tippi Hedren, Otto Preminger, Phyllis Diller, Dale Evans, and Hermes Pan.

26 postcards, ca. 1907-1949, from the John Miller Collection of Texas Real Photographic Postcards and Photographs. Subjects include Trade Day at Rockwall, Texas and the Kandy Kid.

43 framed photographs from the Richard W. Fisher Papers, showing Richard Fisher with various politicians and celebrities throughout his career, including Henry Kissinger, Queen Elizabeth, Oprah Winfrey and more. Fisher was assistant to the United States Secretary of the Treasury (1977-1979), Deputy United States Trade Representative (1997-2001), and President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas (2005-2015).
