SMU Libraries Digital Collections Update: July 2019

In July 2019, SMU Libraries uploaded 684 items into SMU Libraries Digital Collections.

Highlights include:

233 national bank notes, ca. 1884-1929, added to the Rowe-Barr Collection of Texas Currency as part of the TexTreasures FY2019 grant program, sponsored by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Bank notes in this set originate from banks throughout Texas, including San Angelo, San Antonio, Shiner, Stephenville, Victoria, Waco, Waxahachie, and Wichita Falls, among others. Of interest are several bank notes with the serial number 1, including a $5.00 note issued in San Antonio and featuring an image of the landing of the pilgrims on the verso.

52 hand-colored albumen prints, ca. 1895, from the Jack and Beverly Wilgus History of Photography Collection. This album of prints, taken in Japan, features images of Tokyo, Yokohama, Kyoto, and other locales throughout the country. Several well-known locations in Japan are visible, including the Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima and the Great Gate at Yomeimon.

7 oral history interviews from the Southern Methodist University Oral History Interviews and Digital Humanities Student Projects collection. These interviews, with Jacqueline Lowrey, Naomi Samuel, Vanessa Uzoh, Alex Ramirez, Ben Aketu, Sol Villasana, and Enyi Asonye, are part of the Voices of SMU project.

1 album, ca. 1890s, containing 52 albumen photographic prints of the construction of the Bengal-Nagpur Railway in India, various train station depots across India, various scenery, and the album covers. The photographs of the construction are marked with the name “Townshend” and are numbered. The photographs of the scenery and train station depots are unmarked.

139 engine drawing cards, 1908-1937, from the Baldwin Locomotive Works Records collection (Series 7: Data books). Per the collection finding aid, “In 1910, Baldwin began keeping engine drawing data on large cards. Records of locomotives after 1903 were transferred to the cards and continued from that point. The cards are arranged by BLW class numbers and include primarily dimensions of various parts of the locomotive.”

15 photogravures, 1898-1925 by Edward S. Curtis, from the Jack and Beverly Wilgus History of Photography Collection. Among these images are members of several different American Indian tribal nations, including the Skokomish, the Klamath, and the Crow, among others. There are also images of scenery in Washington state and elsewhere in the western part of the United States. A particularly striking image is one of an Achomawi woman holding her baby in a child carrier.

5 works by Texas artist and former Professor and Head of the Department of Art Education at Southern Methodist University Barbara Maples have been added to the Texas Artists collection. Three serigraphs and two block prints depict a variety of subjects both identifiable and abstract. (Note: items are restricted to on-campus viewing only.)

75 documents from the Holloway Family Papers. The items include letters from Eliza Thornton Holloway to her husband Edmund Holloway about travel arrangements and the death of their son, as well as several documents pertaining to Edmund Holloway’s time as a quartermaster of the 8th Infantry of the U.S. Army.

219 transcriptions to the Fowler Family Papers digital collection.

Bridwell Library online exhibitions:

Online only exhibition, Bygone Summers: Images of Chautauqua from the John H. Vincent Papers. This exhibition presents photographs of Chautauqua Lake, the Chautauqua Institution, and Institution leaders taken during the late 1800s and early 1900s. These images are from the personal papers of Bishop John H. Vincent (1832–1920). The Vincent papers are part of the Methodist Studies Archive at Bridwell Library.

Online only exhibition, A Summer Musical Celebration: An Exhibit in Honor of the Organ Historical Society Convention and the Hymn Society Conference. The 22 selections from Bridwell Library Special Collections comprise manuscripts and rare books produced between the twelfth and the late eighteenth centuries. Among those are four hybrid works that combine manuscript and printed materials in a variety of ways within each individual volume.
