SMU Digital Collections Update: June 2019

In June 2019, SMU Libraries uploaded 587 items into SMU Libraries Digital Collections.

Highlights include:

83 national bank notes, ca. 1884-1929, added to the Rowe-Barr Collection of Texas Currency as part of the TexTreasures FY2019 grant program, sponsored by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

National Bank Notes in this set originate from banks throughout Texas, including Mount Pleasant, New Braunfels, Normangee, Plano, Port Arthur, Rockwall, and more. Among the more interesting bank notes are several misprints, including two notes from the same sheet that have versos printed upside down, and an 1882 series note printed with the legal features of a 1902 blue seal note, despite being printed in 1904.

The Aerial Photos of the Northern Part of Dallas Texas digital collection features 12 different images available in both labeled and unlabeled versions. These images were taken in the 1940s by Lloyd M. Long, a Dallas resident and an aerial photography pioneer, and show the area north of Beverly Drive, east of Love Field, and west of White Rock Lake.

100 Texas postcards, ca. 1900s-1960s, were added to the Texas – Photographs, Manuscripts, and Imprints collection. The images include 24 real photographic post cards, including a Czech church and an edited photo of a cowboy riding a gigantic hare.

6 oral history interviews were added to the Southern Methodist University Oral History Interviews and Digital Humanities Student Projects collection. These interviews, with Dr. Bryan Hotchkins, Genesis Reed, Terry Allen, Taylor Toynes, Aaron Sanchez, and Wesley Owens are part of the Voices of SMU project.

22 photographs, ca. 1880-90, of Mexican buildings, cities, and landscapes from the [Collection of Mexico City and Other Mexican Cities Photographs]. Included are photographs of the interior and exterior of the Metropolitan Cathedral in Mexico City, the interior and exterior of Guadalupe church, and scenic views overlooking the city of Guanajuato, Mexico.

47 negatives, 1949-1972, from the Richard Steinheimer Photograph Collection. This collection contains photographs by American railroad photographer Richard Steinheimer. Among the images are views of the Santa Fe San Diego Depot and interior views of an M-190.

20 letters, dated from October 24 to December 26, 1944, from the John C. Cox Jr. World War II Papers. These letters were written by John C. Cox Jr. to his family while he was stationed in the Philippines during the war. He described scenes from his day-to-day experiences, people he met, and patrols he went on. He also included two newsletters depicting photographs taken of soldiers, citizens, and the cities with descriptions for each.

10 negatives, ca. 1948, of King Abdulaziz, also known as Ibn Saud, and Prince Saud bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, from the Robert Yarnall Richie Photograph Collection. King Abdulaziz was the first monarch and founder of Saudi Arabia, and ruled from the creation of the country in 1932 until his death in 1953. Before the founding of Saudi Arabia, he ruled the states of Nejd and Hejaz as Emir, then Sultan, and then King. All of the images show both the King and the Prince seated, from different angles.

Bridwell Online Exhibition:

Bygone Summers: Images of Chautauqua from the John H. Vincent Papers. This exhibition presents photographs of Chautauqua Lake, the Chautauqua Institution, and Institution leaders taken during the late 1800s and early 1900s. These images are from the personal papers of Bishop John H. Vincent (1832–1920). The Vincent papers are part of the Methodist Studies Archive at Bridwell Library.
