Most of the time, we know precisely what is in each collection of photographs. Sometimes, we are pleasantly surprised. The Robert Yarnall Richie photograph collection never fails us, in this regard.
Robert Yarnall Richie (1908-1984) worked as a free-lance commercial and industrial photographer for many large corporations including those in the automobile, aviation, chemical, mining, petroleum, railroad, shipping, steel and other industries, both in the U.S. and overseas. The collection contains corporate and industrial photographs made by Richie from 1932-1975.
As we begin scanning more of Richie’s negatives, we are always amazed at what turns up. From the Hindenburg to the Twentieth Century Locomotive, we find Richie’s work is significant for its artistic qualities as well as documentary information. Last week, we found a set of negatives showing athletes trying out for the 1936 Olympics at Randall’s Island, New York. Among this series is a unique, new photograph of Jesse Owens and Ralph Metcalfe.
