Three faculty members from the Department of Psychology completed the Dallas Marathon on December 14th, 2014: Dr. Hornstein, Dr. Jouriles, and Dr. Kouros. Congratulations to our faculty marathoners!

The Department of Psychology congratulates 3 of its undergraduate majors for being chosen for membership in Phi Beta Kappa. The students are Emaan Rangoonwala, Ashley Schneider, and Jiani Zhu. This is an outstanding achievement and the highest academic honor one can receive as an undergraduate.

Dr. Jouriles

Dr. Ernest Jouriles received the Consulting Editor of the Year Award (2014) from the journal Psychology of Violence, which is published by the American Psychological Association. This award is given for outstanding contributions to the journal, both as an author and as a reviewer.

The second edition of Dr. George Holden’s book on parenting was just released. It is titled: Parenting: A Dynamic Perspective. This is a parent-centered text that focuses on typical parent-child relations, emphasizing the process of parenting, and includes historical and crosscultural perspectives.

Dr. Rosenfield

Dr. David Rosenfield has just co-authored his 100th peer-reviewed article. Number 100 was: Meuret, A.E., Trueba, A.F., Abelson, J.L., Liberzon, I., Auchus, R., Bhaskara, L., Ritz, T., & Rosenfield, D. (in press). High Cortisol Awakening Response and Cortisol Levels Moderate Exposure-based Psychotherapy Success. Psychoneuroendocrinology.

Dr. Kouros

Dr. Chrystyna Kouros has been funded by the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) for her grant application titled “Improving Children’s Well-being: Identifying Mechanisms and Timing of Family Strengthening Programs for Low-income Families through Differential Equation Modeling.“

On a recent episode of NBC’s Meet The Press, Dr. George Holden, psychology professor at SMU, and Michael Farris, president of ParentalRights.Org, debate the benefit of corporal punishment. Dr. Holden is a leading expert on parenting, discipline and family violence. He is a founding steering committee member of the U.S. Alliance to End the Hitting of Children.

Four psychology majors recently received Hamilton Undergraduate Research Awards. They (and their advisors) are: Daniel Trujillo and Courtney Cox (Dr. Chrystyna Kouros) and Katie Bridges and Julia Pylant (Dr. Lorelei Rowe).

Dr. Jim Calvert, a lecturer in the Psychology Department, has been elected as a fellow of the American Psychological Association. Congratulations on this honor, Jim!

A new study, appearing in Journal of Family Psychology, was carried in Time magazine (Aug. 6), U.S. News and World Report (Sept. 2), and in the Huffington Post (August 18).

Psychology faculty member Dr. Chrystyna Kouros found that mothers, who had recently experienced a marital quarrel, were better able than fathers to avoid a negative spill-over into parent-child relations. To read the Time article, go to:
