What do you want to achieve in 2020? The New Year—and new decade—is here, and it’s time to start creating that list. According to U.S. News & World Report, by mid-February, 80 percent of New Year’s Resolutions have been broken. How do you become part of the 20 percent that keeps their resolutions?
Four Tips to Achieve Your Goals This Year.
- Keep it simple. Too many things on the list will overwhelm you.
- Be specific. A resolution to “get organized” is daunting. “Organize the papers on my desk” is much easier to achieve.
- Make it measurable. The goal of being more creative may be hard to achieve. Instead, resolving to create a painting a week or go to a museum once a month is measureable (and specific).
- Create accountability for yourself. Tell your friends, blog about it or commit to a class or program that you have to show up for every week.
A Personal Enrichment Class from SMU Can Help You Stick to Your Goals
SMU’s Personal Enrichment classes fit into all of the guidelines to achieve your goals. We have classes to help you achieve many common resolutions:
- Read More. Reading is “crucial to maintaining brain function and improving our overall intelligence” according to Inc. Join us to examine the social commentary in Hardy’s best-known novel in Tess of the d’Urbervilles: Hardy’s Fictional Masterpiece. Have a story of your own to tell? Learn How to Self-Publish Your Book or transform your ideas for the screen with Screenwriting Workshop, Level II.
- Learn a new skill or hobby. Day-to-day life can hamper creativity unless you actively seek a time and place to spark your imagination. Studio Art classes like Printmaking and Watercolor Workshop can help you master new techniques. More of a shutterbug? Classes in Photography cover techniques to capture and edit compelling images.
- Master a Language. Whether you are a traveler wanting to improve your ability to communicate abroad or someone who loves linguistics, we offer French, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese in our spring Language Courses.
- Connect with Friends. Taking a class together is a great way to enjoy time with your friends while exploring something new. Register together for Ignite Your Creativity: The Artist’s Way, Historic Dallas Neighborhoods or Collecting Contemporary Art for a shared experience you can talk about for years.
- Travel. Even if you never leave the streets of Dallas, you can explore the world in our continuing education classes. Marie Antoinette’s Versailles, Jane Austen’s England, Beyond Downton Abbey: Britain’s Greatest Country Houses, and Art of the Italian High Renaissance will each give you a taste of the world that awaits.
These are just a few of the 50+ courses offered this spring designed to enrich your life, grow your skills and help you reach your 2020 goals. Learn more and enroll at smu.edu/personalenrichment.
