Mission

The program of Arts Entrepreneurship at SMU seeks to equip its creatively minded students with entrepreneurial skills so that they increase their chances of making a living from their creativity and serve as the principle driving force of their own careers. We seek to train heroically minded arts entrepreneurs who contribute to culture, the service of something larger than themselves, their community and audience.

For most, artistic technique is not enough. Entrepreneurial technique alone is not enough for a sustainable career in the arts. But when both are developed, students dramatically increase their chances of both manifesting their own professional opportunities, which often leads to job creation for others, and of consistently working via personally meaningful pursuits.

Jim Hart is the Director of Arts Entrepreneurship at Southern Methodist University, Meadows School of the Arts. The Department of Arts Management and Arts Entrepreneurship each have new minors.
