In Storming the Capitol, Trump’s Most Extreme Supporters Did Significant Damage to Their Cause

Matthew Wilson, a Senior Fellow at the Tower Center, wrote a commentary for the Italian Institute for International Political Studies about the storming of the Capitol by Trump’s extreme supporters. Wilson suggests that the events that transpired did nothing to help Trump’s cause and shattered the uneasy alliance with mainstream Republicans. In order for the Republican Party to win in the coming years, they will need to retain the core of Republican support and become more pleasing to the “educated, affluent suburbanites” that used to be the base of the party.
