SMMUG Logo & T-Shirt Design Contest

The Contest

We are looking for a new logo for our Mac User Group. We want to see it on our website, on our t-shirts, and on our banner. We need your help. Make your logo your own, which means not including the Apple logo or Apple trademarked images.

Pretty straight forward.

The logo can be on any doc size, and can be submitted as an EPS, AI, JPEG, PDF, or PSD.

The t-shirt design must be as an EPS or Adobe Illustrator (AI) file. You can draw the front and back of a t-shirt to get the idea of how it will look.

The banner should be in the dimensions of 4×12 and able to scale up to 2ft by 6ft. Can be submitted as an EPS, AI, JPEG, PDF, or PSD.

The Prizes

We have a iTunes Gift Card for each category: Logo, T-Shirt, Banner. Yes, you can win in multiple categories.

The Deadline

The contest ends October 22, 2009! Deadline now extended to October 31, 2009!

College Textbooks Now Available on the iPhone & iPod touch.

[Reprinted from our Academic Computing Blog]

College students can now argue that the iPhone is required for college.

CourseSmart-iPhone.jpgCourseSmart, a revolutionary online subscription service for textbooks, has released a new iPhone app. The “eTextbooks for the iPhone,” allows users to access more than 7,000 titles from it’s CourseSmart library covering over 900 course areas across 113 disciplines. According to CourseSmart, “When you purchase eTextbooks from CourseSmart you will have access from any computer with Internet access as well as the iPhone application. Study the way that fits your schedule, whether that’s viewing text in the screen, printing out pages to read, or copy and pasting important passages into study guides.”

Beyond the benefit of having your textbook always with you, many of the eTextbooks are 60 to 75 percent of the cost of their physical cousins. Nice for an app that is free from Apple’s App Store.

Check out the app for yourself or read more about it.

Also, Todd R. Weiss of PC World has a nice write up of the app, including some questions that faculty may need to answer. The Todd R. Weiss article is available at http://shar.es/9RIr

PowerPC left behind by Adobe

Adobe Kicks PowerPC To The CurbToday, Adobe updated PowerPC users in their plans for the future of Adobe products. According to the Creative Suite 4 Family FAQ, “Adobe intends for future versions of the Creative Suite range of products to run on Intel based Macs with no support for their installation on PowerPC systems.” Your current CS3 & CS4 applications will continue to run on both PowerPC and Intel based systems. Unfortunately, unless there is a “critical issues,” there will be no more updates or patches for PowerPC users.

You can read more about it at http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/faq/

The Refining of Mac OS: Early Impressions of Snow Leopard

When Apple’s Snow Leopard website advertises “more reliable disk eject” as a one of the primary refinements in the next incarnation of its operating system, all but Apple diehards might initially wonder if moving from Mac OS 10.5 to 10.6 is really worthwhile. With Snow Leopard, Apple seizes an opportunity to focus on fine-tuning its core software rather than serving up major changes or additions in a sweeping overhaul; Snow Leopard simply makes Intel (that’s right, only Intel) Macs “faster, more reliable, and easier to use.”

In evaluating the current release candidate for OS 10.6, I found that Snow Leopard performs just so—installing quickly and even taking up just over 6GB less disk space than a clean install of the previous Leopard. Meeting the hardware requirements of an Intel processor, 1GB of system memory, and 5GB of free hard drive space, my test system seemed enjoyed snappy performance most noticeably in the form of interface animations and graphics.

While simply installing Snow Leopard proved easy and functional, it was not until I opened Apple’s Mail application when the relevance of this upgrade became immediately apparent, specifically for Apple customers like SMU’s who also take advantage of Microsoft’s Exchange mail servers. With Snow Leopard, Apple adds thorough support for the Exchange email system, enabling Mac OS to use its own Mail, iCal, and Address Book applications to access Exchange services such as Outlook’s email, calendar invitations, and Global Address Lists. Setup of an SMU Exchange email account proved extremely easy, and in minutes SMU email, SMU calendar, and SMU contacts were accessible. Here are some features I’ve tested successfully:

  • Mail was able to auto-complete names from the SMU Global Address List
  • iCal was able to view free/busy availability of other SMU accounts and conference rooms
  • iCal was able to manage multiple Exchange calendars, perfect for managing departmental or other employee calendars
  • Address Book was able to view the SMU Global Address List as well as an individual’s Exchange-based contacts

Many of these features are, of course, subject to further refinement and change before Snow Leopard’s finale September 2009 release date. Initial testing reveals that Snow Leopard will improve the performance of Intel (again, that’s right, only Intel) Macs while substantially diminishing the amount of hard drive space required for installation—and should be a smooth upgrade for customers already running Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard). The most substantial refinements in Snow Leopard finally deliver tight integration between Mac OS and Microsoft Exchange—perfect for Apple customers at SMU.

Get Assets Back Out of PowerPoint

Have you ever needed to get pictures or a movie you’ve imported into a PowerPoint back out to use in another presentation or on a web page? I might have an easier way when copy-and-paste just won’t cut it.

Keynote_package_contents.jpgApple’s Keynote.

Open the PowerPoint presentation in Apple’s Keynote application. When you save the newly converted Keynote presentation, all the assets get bundled with the presentation. Just right click on the file and choose “Show Package Contents.” You will see all of the images and other media files from your presentation. You can now open the files in Photoshop to edit, reuse them in another presentation, or even post them on a web page.

It’s not all about iPods…

Watch the KeynoteWith the recent announcements from Apple (which you can watch at www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/keynote) about iPods (which you can see at www.apple.com) , some of you might have missed some of the little details and some other announcements. Hopefully, this will get you up to speed.

Apple iTunes 7.4 Update.

Apple has updated iTunes to version 7.4. Yes, you know that. How else are you going to use the new iPods with iTunes without an update. Did you also notice that it also supports closed captioning (when available)? With the update, some of the video content purchase on iTunes will now support closed captioning. Also, for the visually impaired (or just those over 35 ;-), you can watch videos at a larger size inside the iTunes window. You can download the update at www.apple.com/itunes/download

Apple credits some iPhone users $200 credit.

Many iPhone users were upset by Wednesday’s $200 price drop on the iPhone. Apple has a pricing policy stating..

Should Apple reduce its price on any shipped product within 10 calendar days of shipment, you may contact Apple Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775 to request a refund or credit of the difference between the price you were charged and the current selling price. To receive the refund or credit you must contact Apple within 14 business days of shipment.

Those purchase over the 14 days, are not covered, but some users have reported on forums mixed success contacting AT&T directly. One user stated AT&T was issuing him a $200 credit on his next bill even though he had purchased his iPhone on the first day.
An Open LetterOf course after I write this, Steve Jobs writes an open letter to iPhone owners. Steve has been overwhelmed by the "hundreds of emails from iPhone customers who are upset about Apple dropping the price of iPhone by $200 two months after it went on sale." In response,

… we have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store.

They are still working on the details, but until then you can read the letter at www.apple.com/hotnews/openiphoneletter

Problems with Embedded Media & QuickTime in Web Browsers

Some of you may have come across a web page that links to or has embedded a media file that no longer plays. You could swear it worked before you updated to iTunes 7, but now it’s not. Instead you are seeing the faded QuickTime Logo with a question mark. Do not worry, your not going crazy. It did work.

When you install iTunes 7, to get full functionality, you also have to install QuickTime 7.1.3. With the installation of QuickTime 7.1.3, or even QuickTime 7.1.2 for that matter, a small plug-in is installed in your Internet Plug-Ins folder. The QuickTime plugin.plugin is most likely the root of your problem. To fix, just navigate to the System’s /Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder. This is the root level folder not your user folder. Move the QuickTime plugin.plugin to the desktop and restart your browser.

What you should now see is the QuickTime Logo (above) that is replaced by the control bar (below) once your media loads.

If that does not work, you may also try removing the VLC Plugin.plugin from the Internet Plug-Ins folder.

Hope this helps.
