Mac usage surges amongst University of Virginia freshmen since 2004

The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) is reporting that over 40 percent of University of Virginia’s freshmen were using a Mac in 2009.

According to the University of Virginia’s Information Technology and Communication (ITC), which services the IT needs for most of the campus, 43 percent of first-year students at its residence halls during 2009 were using a Mac.

The figure represents a continuation of a five-year trend that’s seeing increased Mac penetration on the campus amongst first year students. Prior to 2004, Mac usage amongst freshmen hovered between three and four percent (with the exception of 1997). 2004, however, served as a watershed year: share increased by four percentage points.

Read the TUAW posting here.
The data is based on a census of first-year residence halls each fall conducted by the CAs, and can be found here.

Mac Dayz 2010 Wrap Up

Just want to thank everyone that helped make Mac Dayz 2010 possible. We had some wonderful sessions and guests.

Cali Lewis at SMU

Cali Lewis gave a great insight into what it takes to produce a daily podcast show. Her tips for those just starting out were priceless. I heard from a faculty member attending that it was nice to has someone reinforce the concepts that he had been stressing all semester. One student commented on his blog:

“The event was really informative and helpful, with a great host to pull it all together. I feel like the advice she gave really helped show how video podcast can be started and how to manage them effectively. I am looking forward to seeing if anyone in the crowd was inspired and what comes from this.”

After the “Developing iPhone Apps with Steve Hayman” session, I felt like I could easily produce a iPhone App. In fact, I attended the repeat session with my laptop in hand and successfully made the web app that accessed the Apple Trailers site, but failed miserably when building the SMU app after I missed a step. That’s Steve Hayman’s gift; He makes it look so easy.

Cali Lewis at SMUCongrats to the winners at the Late Night @ Computer Corner. Dean Elazab was the lucky winner of the Apple iPad.

Thanks to everyone who came out for the event.

Could the rumored Apple Tablet be a Student’s new textbook?

With all the rumors of an Apple branded tablet device, some textbook publishers have produced a demo video of how they would like to use the device. The video is created by Coursesmart, a joint venture of five textbook publishers and the makers of the “eTextbooks for the iPhone” App [iTunes link], and demonstrates how students might use tablet-based textbooks. Of course, as no one has seen the Apple Tablet, everything is based on Coursesmart’s renderings and not any specific applications being developed with Apple.
