In December 2020, SMU Libraries uploaded 433 items into SMU Libraries Digital Collections. Highlights include:
138 postcards, ca. 1904-1930, from the John Miller Morris Real Photographic Postcards and Photographs of Texas collection. This project was made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services and Texas State Library and Archives Commission (Grant Number TXT-21010). (2021). These postcards feature images from across Texas and include family portraits, photographs of buildings, street scenes, and more. One example is an image of Christmas dinner at Camp MacArthur in Waco.
5 interviews from the Southern Methodist University Oral History Interviews and Digital Humanities Student Projects collection. These interviews, with Reverend Todd Atkins, Frances Castenada Dyess, Patricia Hicks, Damon Hurst, and Nariana Sands are part of the Voices of SMU project.
41 photographs, 1944, from the Frank J. Davis World War II Photographs collection. These include views of Naples, Sorrento, the ancient city of Pompeii, and various landmarks both in and around Rome, including the Acquedotto dei Quintili, the Palazzi Imperiali del Palatino, the Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II, and the Palazzo Venezia from which Benito Mussolini gave several notable speeches during the 1930s and 1940s. Also of note are several views of Mt. Vesuvius, taken shortly after the 1944 eruption.
79 film negatives, ca. 1884-1935, from the Collection of Dallas Morning News negatives and copy photographs. All of these images depict scenes of Texas, with the majority of them in Dallas and others in Austin and Corpus Christi. The negatives show a variety of newsworthy events from the early 20th century and turn of the 19th century, including the 1908 and 1930 Trinity River Floods, the State Fair of Texas, an air show at Love Field, and many others.
25 scrapbook pages, 1936-1946, from DeForrest Judd Scrapbook, 1936-1950. These pages contain newspaper clippings about art shows in which Judd participated, including the Ninth Texas General Exhibition in Houston and exhibitions at Theater ’47 in Dallas. Also included are a number of programs and several notes written to Judd, including a Christmas card from Velma and Otis Dozier.
50 negatives, 1949-1967, from the Richard Steinheimer Photograph Collection. These images were taken throughout California and are mainly of Southern Pacific locomotives and stations. Many of these photographs were taken on a trip Steinheimer took with his family and feature images of trains around the Crystal Lake area in the Sierra Mountains, including this striking view of a westbound freight.
3 photographs, ca. 1915, from American Border Troops and the Mexican Revolution, which show three views of a wrecked locomotive on a hillside in Mexico.
43 photographs, ca. 1930s-1940s, from Photographs – Bywaters/Dozier Sketching Trips – 1930s – 1940s. Highlights include images of various buildings across Texas, shipyards, and livestock, including one image of a saddled steer.
49 items from the Southern Methodist University Course Catalogs collection for academic years 1927-1928, 1933-1934, 1944-1945, 1954-1955, 1956-1957, 1980-1981, and 1989-1990. These catalogs contain general information and course descriptions from each of SMU’s programs of study.
