SMU Libraries Digital Collections Update: January 2020

In January 2020, SMU Libraries uploaded 208 items into SMU Libraries Digital Collections. Highlights include:

68 photographs and pamphlets, 1861-1940s. This project was made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services and Texas State Library and Archives Commission (Grant Number TXT-20008). (2020). These items include campaign literature, church publications, publications of various religious associations, and images of early settlements, businesses and events in Texas.

5 oral history interviews from the Southern Methodist University Oral History Interviews and Digital Humanities Student Projects collection. These interviews, with Rev. Richie Butler, Michael Carter, Ava Damri, Ashley Isles, and Rev. Dr. Sheron Patterson, are part of the Voices of SMU project.

One issue of Camera Work and 8 individual images from the issue, 1903, from the Jack and Beverly Wilgus History of Photography Collection. Camera Work was an influential photographic quarterly journal, published and edited by Alfred Stieglitz from 1903 until 1917. It is known for its high-quality photogravures reproducing the work of many notable photographers of the Photo-Secession movement, and its editorial purpose to establish photography as a fine art.

9 drawings, 1889-1901, from the Collection of Baldwin Locomotive Works Records. These include erecting card drawings for various railroads and companies, including Southern Pacific, Duluth and Iron Range, and Arizona and New Mexico.

17 images, 1933, from the Sir Ellice Victor Elias Sassoon Papers and Photographs. These images were taken in various locations, including Shanghai, China, and Mount Fuji in Japan, among others. A particularly striking image shows a busy waterway in Shanghai, with a crowd of people standing on a bridge above.

10 obsolete and canceled Texas currency notes, ca. 1837-1862, added to the Rowe-Barr Collection of Texas Currency. Among the notes are Star Notes from the early Republic of Texas and private scrip from a variety of issuers, including the Houston Tap and Brazoria Railway Company, the Texas Telegraph Company, Jones & Dunaway, and unissued private scrip by E. W. Cave.

2 photographs, ca. 1900-1910, from the Vivian J. Aunspaugh Art Club Records. These photographs feature a portrait of Vivian Aunspaugh as a young girl and a group of women painting china while seated around a table.

9 items, 1910-1923, from the Elmer and Diane Powell Collection on Mexico and the Mexican Revolution. Among these items are political cartoons featuring Victoriano Huerta and Pancho Villa, as well as five letters written by Emiliano Zapata.

1 pamphlet, 1885, entitled California’s Favorite. The Wind Turbine Mill. This pamphlet contains information and images of a turbine windmill, including construction, uses, and reviews from previous purchasers.

78 news clip and b-roll videos from March, April, and May 1960 from WFAA Newsfilm Collection, ca. 1960-1978. These clips are in black and white, and primarily silent, and feature video of both Dallas news and national news events. Highlights include several clips of events and students at SMU, parts of speeches by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and footage featuring Reverend Ashton Jones, a civil rights advocate from Los Angeles who visited Dallas.
